Dengue Fever

Cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in Cairns.
Typical symptoms are:

high fever
tiredness
headache
muscle and joint aches
loss of appetite
foul or metallic taste in mouth
fine rash

HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR APPOINTMENT

1. Make an appointment time that suits you. Evenings or weekends can often be a convenient time to see the doctor.

2. Make a list of issues that you would like to discuss with the doctor. This allows you to convey your thoughts more clearly when you’re in the doctor’s room. It does not mean that the doctor will fix your whole list of problems in one visit, but you can plan follow-up visits so that you and the doctor can work through these issues in order of priority.

3. Turn up on time. By turning up late to an appointment you make it much more difficult for the doctor to work through your problems and it also makes the doctor run late.

4. Turn off your mobile phone. Nobody likes it when people take phone calls during an appointment - you can return the call after the appointment.

5. Have an open mind. Often patients have a pre-conceived idea on the outcome of an appointment. For example, antibiotic treatment for a common cold. The doctor is a health expert that is there to give you the best advice possible. Listen to what the doctor has to say and then discuss your concerns. Often what your friends or family have told you is needed for your problem is not consistent with evidence based medical practice.

6. Most importantly – communicate. Often patients are reluctant to talk to the doctor because they are embarrassed or confused. Ask questions, the doctor is there to help you.
